Despite being dead for over a decade, Kurt Cobain has managed to earn over $50million (or just under £27 million in real money) in the last twelve months. According to Forbes magazine, their regular survey of top-earning dead celebrities puts the Nirvana frontman ahead of the likes of Elvis Presley (in second place with $42 million) and John Lennon (lagging behind at number four with a paltry $24 million).
The American business magazine notes that the haul comes from the 25% stake in Nirvana’s back catalogue that Cobain’s widow Courtney Love sold to publishing company Primary Wave earlier this year. This knocks Presley into second place as the richest rock stiff for the first time since 2002. Also in the top ten top earning musicians who are now pushing up daisies are Ray Charles (number 8 with $10m) and Johnny Cash (a respectable $8m and a number 10 placing). Other artists in the list include Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, Dr Seuss, Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe. Nice work if you can get it...?
