Madonna Explains All to Oprah

Comments

Madonna is to explain her side of the current adoption controversy for the first time… on Oprah Winfrey's TV show. She will appear on the top-rated US programme on Wednesday 25 October to defend herself against charges that her attempted adoption of a Malawian child is illegal. "You've read the headlines, heard the rumors, and seen the photos," claim the show's publicists. "Now, for the first time Madonna speaks out with her side of the story on the adoption controversy."

The singer has been granted a temporary custody order allowing her to bring one-year-old David Banda to Britain until the adoption has been approved by Malawian authorities. However, the Human Rights Consultative Committee claims that the adoption is illegal because she has not lived in the country for a year and a half. Now, the baby's father, farmer Yohane Banda, claims that he was thought the superstar simply wanted to bring up David in the UK. "I was never told that adoption means that David will no longer be my son," he told Associated Press. "I want more clarification on the adoption. I would prefer that David goes back to the orphanage where I can see him."

The Oprah show will be recorded today (24 October). In a statement issued on last week, Madonna said: "My husband and I began the adoption process many months prior to our trip to Malawi. I did not wish to disclose my intentions to the world prior to the adoption happening as this is a private family matter. Nevertheless, we have gone about the adoption procedure according to the law like anyone else who adopts a child. Reports to the contrary are totally inaccurate. The procedure includes an l8 month evaluation period after which time we hope to make this adoption permanent. This was not a decision or commitment that my family or I take lightly."
