The Q Awards 2006 brought to you by Yahoo! Music took place today at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel and proved that it is, undoubtedly, THE music event of the year.
The cream of the world’s music stars including: U2, Kasabian, The Who, The Kooks, Paul Weller, Oasis, Corinne Bailey Rae, Sugababes, Orson, The Feeling, Manic Street Preachers, Peter Gabriel, Embrace, Primal Scream, The Killers, Take That, Smokey Robinson, Muse, Keane, Jay Kay, Razorlight, A-ha, Gnarls Barkley, Jeff Lynne of ELO fame and Girls Aloud all attended the unique, non-televised ceremony.
The big winners of the day were Oasis and U2. Oasis took home the award for Best Act in the World Today along with the Classic Songwriter Award for Noel Gallagher. U2’s The Edge collected the Q Innovation in Sound Award, with U2 receiving the special one-time-only Q Award Of Awards: Band of Bands accolade for polling most votes from Q readers through the history of the Q Awards
Commenting about the awards Q Editor, Paul Rees, said: “Oasis and U2 have remained perennially popular with Q and its readers. In handing out four awards between them, Q magazine and its readers have once again re-stated the high regard in which we hold them both.”
The Arctic Monkeys who picked up an impressive four nominations, won the Q Award for Best Album – considered one of the most important awards of the day, as well as The People’s Choice award.
Other standout winners of the day were Muse for best live act; The Killers for best video, presented to them by legendary film maker Tim Burton; The Who received the prestigious Q Legend Award and Primal Scream won the Q Groundbreaker award.
In a personal double whammy for Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, his classic songwriter award was presented by one of his heroes - Paul Weller.
In a year that has seen Q Magazine mark its 20th birthday, the awards is still the highpoint, Q Editor Paul Rees said: "The Q Awards recognises both the essential music of the past year and that which has shaped and enriched the whole of our musical lives.”
