Q Awards: Merit Award given to the Manics

Comments

Chosen by Q magazine
Presented by John Cale and Johnny Borrell

Winner: Manic Street Preachers

Q gives the Manic Street Preachers the Q Merit Award for 2006. Bursting out of their hometown in Blackwood, Wales in 1991, the Manics were four Clash loving indie kids, whose poltical rhetoric, stridently controversial lyrics and punky attitude were an antidote to the wave of baggy pretenders that were clogging the charts. Intially ridiculed, by the time of 1994's album The Holy Bible, they were creating meaningful, intelligent and often harrowing music, centred around the striking figure of Richey Edwards. When Edwards disappeared the following year amid reports of mental problems, self-mutilation and suicidal thoughts, the remainong three members - lyricist Nicky Wire, singer James Dean Bradfield and drummer Sean Moore - carried on and scored a Number One hit with A Design For Life. Fifteen years after their formation, the Manics continue to release strong albums, and while they take a much deserved rest with a slew of solo albums, Q rewards their hard work and tenacity with the Q Merit Award.
