Q Awards: Q Groundbreaker Award

Comments

Chosen by Q magazine
Presented by Russell Brand

Winner: Primal Scream

Jesus And Mary Chain drummer Bobby Gillespie formed Primal Scream in 1984 as a side-project and quickly found themselves signed to Alan McGee's burgeoning Creation label. Their 1987 debut and self-titled 1989 follow-up both used the slightly-retro indie sound of the day, but it was a chance encounter between DJ Andy Weatherall and the track I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have, that produced one of the classic tracks of the early '90s - Loaded. Taking this as a launch-pad for the ultimate in indie-dance crossover records, the band issued Screamadelica in 1991 and defined a genre. They have continued to make great records, including 1996's Vanishing Point and 2000's XTRMNTR, but for the pioneering work on Loaded, they are named as Q Groundbreakers today.
