Q Awards: The Q Idol Award

Comments

Chosen by Q magazine
Presented by Jonathan Ross

Winner: Take That

Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange, Howard Donald and Robbie Williams became Take That in Manchester in 1990 when manager Nigel Martin Smith was looking for people to form a new boy band in the wake of the success of acts like New Kids On The Block and Bros. With Take That, he produced a homegrown troupe of singers and dancers whose hits - including It Only Takes A Minute, A Million Love Songs, Could It Be Magic, Back For Good, Pray and Relight My Fire - bridged the gap between teenage girls and the ever-lucrative Pink Pound. When Williams left the group acrimoniously in 1995, the band worked on for another year before calling it quits. A helpline for distraught fans was quickly set up, and many prayers were answered earlier this year when Take That - still minus Robbie, whose solo career goes from strength to strength - reformed for a reunion tour. With new material in the offing, Take That have proved that the UK can produce the finest pop in the world. Q salutes you, sirs!

  • Fantastic to have the boys back. They really deserve this award. Artic Monkeys can only dream of having the success Take That had all those years ago, not to mention their new found success.

  • Tell the Arctics to have ten years off and then come back and we will see if anyone even remembers them, never mind come back to sell out tours. Tossers!!

  • Couldn't think of more deserving winners! Great to have them back - even if its just pure nostalgia. Although Back For Good is one of the greatest ever ballads.

  • Well and truly deserved boys. I've waited patiently for 10 years to have you back, and the sell out tours were anything to go by I'm not the only one. Here's to the next 10 years!

  • well, i must admit, giving TT an award is quite fun. or funny. but being so furious about Arctics' "bollocks" comment is really stupid. what can i say, sometimes Q and Q readers are a bit MOR'ons.. sorry, i had to say this. a little banter can't be wrong, eh?

  • Forget the boys band stuff and listen to the music , ain´t Take That great ? Sure they did a lot of very good songs and I hope they will continue now.

  • Oh dear - is this a case of Q selling out to get a wider readership?. The whole point of Q was it was meant to be a proper music magazine - what next awards for Boyzone, Liberty X and Shayne Ward?. This pathetic award trivialises Q. Take that are the 21st century equivalent of Cliff Richard.

Posted by Charles at 4:48 PM | 13/11/2006 | Report Abuse

  • I wonder what you consider to be proper music? You sound like a bit of a snob to me. You wanna hear proper music? Get a copy of Mark Owen's solo albums. There's proper music for ya!
I've heard bits of the new Take That album and guess what.....sounds like proper music to me! All original stuff, no covers and nothing to do with Cliff Richard me thinks! (what's wrong with Cliff anyway?)
I'm glad I'm not restricted when it comes to my taste in music. So I can enjoy the Manic Streat Preachers, Oasis, U2, Faith No More, Iron Maiden, Radio Head, Green Day, Robbie Williams, John Legend, The Monkees, The Beatles, Aerosmith, Evita (Andrew Lloyd Webber), Hair (the musical), Maná (Mexican band), Shakira, Madonna, The Kooks, Juanes, Razorlight ánd......TAKE THAT! (the list is a lot longer, but I think you'll get my drift)

    Open your mind!
