Can it be twelve short months since we last packed up and moved en masse to the Park Lane Hilton for another star-studded Q Awards? Yes indeed. And Q will be in residence again on Monday 30 October as we celebrate our twentieth anniversary with a very special ceremony.
The Q Awards began as the antidote to the Oscars and BRITS, way back in 1990 at Ronnie Scott’s. At the first one, Paul and Linda McCartney arrived early and helped us lay the tables. A cavalcade of similarly bizarre rock events followed…
Over the last 16 years, the event has played host to real rock royalty. Sir Sting, Elton, Mick, Macca, Spike, Eric and Bob. Plus the people’s favourites Jerry Dammers, John Lydon, Ian Dury and Joe Strummer.
There have been walk outs – Pete Townshend after Patti Smith’s interminable rant. Sharleen Spiteri after Badly Drawn Boy nicked her seat, Goldie Lookin’ Chain when they couldn’t skin up at the table and Paul McCartney when Phil Spector took the stage.
And there have been tears – Robert Smith because his awards suit no longer fitted him, Scott Walker when Jarvis Cocker hugged him, Robin Gibb when it all got too much and Johnny Vegas when the buffet closed.
There have been strange liaisons, not least John Lydon and Kate Bush – who formed Sex Bush on the spot while Liam and Robbie had their handbags raised.
Liam also flicked ash in Mick Jagger’s hair, called Chris Martin a “Plantpot” and got arrested in different years. Shane McGowan set fire to Bono’s hair and confusion reigned at the door as soon-to-be PM Blair and Blur arrived at the same time.
There have been notorious outbursts: Elton on Madonna, Yoko on Macca, Christina Aguilera’s dress and much bonhomie and irreverence from the specially-invited guests as they get a little unfocused around the edge. And there’s always Bono, ready to sign autographs outside, sing a capella for Shane McGowan and talk to anyone.
With the likes of Michael Stipe, PJ Harvey, The Prodge, Eddie Izzard, Cher, BB King, The Pet Shops, Chemical Brothers, George Clinton, Mark E Smith, New Order, Duran Duran, Jimmy Page, Kevin Rowland, Bjork and David Bowie all making appearances, this year’s attendees will have something to live up to.
