Queen scooped the best-selling record in Britain with their Greatest Hits, but this week three different musical giants are battling for the top spot. Yet, if the mid-weeks are anything to go by, they’ll all be beaten by a boy band.
Oasis, U2 and The Beatles all released new collections of songs on Monday (dubbed Super Monday by HMV), with The Beatles’s mash-up Love (remixed by Sir George Martin) providing the most reason to buy. Oasis are currently edging towards the number one position, but with so-called ‘housewife’ sales from the supermarkets yet to be counted, experts are saying that it’s likely Westlife will beat them by around 5000 sales.
With the big three all behaving quite disappointingly of late, maybe Westlife are the only ones rock ‘n’ roll enough to deserve to ring. U2 have been chastised for taking their old stylist to court over some stolen clothes and it’s not as though Noel’s been quiet and retiring throughout the year though, he’s taken swings at everyone from the Arctic Monkeys to The Klaxons in a way that would best suit an old grandpa rather than a rock star.
Meanwhile, Sir Paul McCartney was on the phone to XFM from his country pile this morning chatting to a beyond starstruck Lauren Laverne about, well, not very much at all. The divorce, which McCartney was obviously expecting to be asked about (Laverne: “But EVERYONE loves you” Macca: “Oh, I’m not so sure about that.”) went unmentioned, as did The Beatles record. He has a cuckoo clock apparently, well done him.
Who do you think will win the battle of the hits?
