Lou Reed's tai chi DVD!

Comments

Not since Carl Douglas released Kung Fu Fighting back in 1974 has rock and martial arts come together with such aplomb. Lou Reed has announced that he's recorded the narration and music for a special tai chi DVD. Reed's tai chi instructor, Master Ren GuangYi has released Chen Taijiquan - Lao Jia Yi Lu & Straight Sword, a 90 minute guide to the “Chen”-style form of the art. The DVD features footage and photos of Master Ren going through his moves in New York’s Central Park, while Reed provides two separate ambient scores and commentary in his trademark laconic drawl. It’s no surprise really, as Reed has been a student of the martial art since the 1980s and has on several occasions brought Master Ren onstage to do his thing while the songwriter performed.

Whatever next? Who do you think should be involved in the next rock/martial arts/self-help DVD crossover? Chris Martin's yoga beginner's course? Pilates with Bono? Or how about kickboxing with Britney? Leave a comment here...

  • I would like to say great I've known that Lou has been a long time student of Chinese Martial Arts and before I knew that I had admired him as a musician for years and years. Within the Chinese Martial Arts community resides some famous and not so famous musicians from David Lee Roth to Guy Forsyth. As a practioner of CMA for over 45 year I hope more musician/martial artist will bring music specifically scored for martial arts.
