Chartwatch: UK chart is old news

Comments

Boyband nostalgia was the overwhelming factor in yesterday’s charts with a number 1 single from a band who’ve been away for a decade, and the greatest hits of a slightly more recent, but no less boy-filled, band topping the album charts.

Take That moved up three places to the number one single spot with Patience – their first hit in 10 years – while Westlife beat greatest hits albums from Oasis, U2 and The Beatles to the top of the album charts with their own hits compilation.

Oasis managed the second position with Stop The Clocks, leaving The Beatles at three and U2 at four. Other greatest hits albums from George Michael, Girls Aloud and Jamiroquai filled the chart, meaning that the Razorlight album was the only album of original material in the top 10.

Former Spice Girl Emma Bunton had her first hit single in three years as the Children In Need song Downtown climbed 21 places to three. Nelly Furtado was the highest new entry at 13 with All Good Things (Come To An End), the third single from her album Loose, and Razorlight and Girls Aloud both re-entered the top 10 with Something Kinda Ooooh and America respectively. Faithless and Pink both had top thirty entries, while Red Hot Chilli Peppers made it to number 16.

Are boy bands worth the hype? Or should Oasis, U2 or The Beatles have nabbed the top spot? And why are we all so nostalgic all of a sudden?

  • Clearly, not all boy bands are equal and, as Westlife have been at the top for 8 years and broken all manner of 'records', they obviously deserve the accolades and continued support of their fans

  • Nothing new there then. It's always the same during the run-up to Christmas - "best of" compliations reigning supreme.

  • Westlife are rubbish! Dull and dreary beyond belief...

  • The Beatles are still better than everyone else (including Noel's band!!) In a span of just four years they went from "Love Me Do" to "Steawberry Fields Forever," LOVE is an interesting concept and the Martins' should be congratulated for their job on the project. Beatles #1? Without a doubt!!
