Bono is to be awarded an honorary knighthood in the Queen’s New Year Honours List. Although not being a British citizen means he won’t be able to call himself Sir Bono, the U2 frontman is being honoured for “services to the music industry and his humanitarian work”.
Prime Minister Tony Blair sent a letter of congratulation, saying “You have tirelessly used your voice to speak up for Africa. I know from talking to you how much these causes matter to you. I know as well how knowledgeable you are about the problems we face and how determined you are to do all you can to help overcome them. I want personally to thank you for the invaluable role you played in the run-up to the Gleneagles G8 summit. Without your personal contribution, we could not have achieved the results we did. So thank you and I look forward to continuing to work together to maintain momentum on Africa, and ensure leaders around the world meet the promises they have made."
In a statement on www.U2.com, Bono is said to be “very flattered” by the honour, “particularly if the honour - like its French counterpart - opens doors for his long standing campaigning work against extreme poverty in Africa”.
Which rock star do you think should be honoured next? Sir Pete Doherty? Lord Liam Of Gallagher? Have your say here.

Bono is not just a rock star. Don't pretend that you don't understand that Bono deserves his honour. Doherty and Gallagher haven't done anything for poor people of Africa yet.
