Against speculation, Pete Doherty has avoided a jail sentence relating to seven counts of drug possession.
The Babyshambles singer had pleaded guilty to possessing heroin, crack cocaine, and cannabis from two arrests in April and one in August. He was fined £770 and banned from driving for four months after the judge, Jane McIvor, said the offences were not serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence.
This also follows a plea from Doherty's lawyers that jail would only expose him to more drugs and the progress he has made in rehab this year would be jeopardised.

Fining people like this with lots of money makes the court look like idiots. Poor people like me can not afford drugs, thats why we are not in court, at least one reason. This is like making a rapist buy condoms. Dumb!!!

He's not getting preferential treatment - every band has taken drugs from the 1960s to the present day - why focus on Doherty? It is the media making an example of someone - it's the nanny culture of the current political environment.

Can anybody honestly believe that he is a good musician/artist/writer? He is ludicrously over-rated and this is because he's in the public eye so much. In reality he has gone from being an average (at best) musician to being a C-list celebrity drug addicted thug. He's proof that heroin does not make you a good artist.
But I suppose if he went to jail he'd go and release some journals from prison so this sentence at least saves us from that horror.

pete doherty is a brilliant singer song writer and is loved by many of the population
my bet is, all of you slagging him off are over 30 and live in a nice little cottage in the countryside.
pete doherty is a talented, gorgeous young man.
