Macca battles Morrissey for living icon status

Comments

Sir Paul McCartneyn is running alongside Morrissey and Sir David Attenborough for the title of Britain's greatest living icon in a BBC poll.

The three beat Sir Michael Caine, David Bowie and five other famous Britons in the poll organised by BBC 2's The Culture Show. The winner will be decided by public vote and announced on December 16.

Macca told the BBC, "I don't anticipate ever giving up. They'll have to wheel me on to the stage."

Should Paul McCartney be crowned Britain's Greatest Living Icon? Who do you think should be in the running?

  • They would give this award to Moz in a million years. He would never accept such a trite acolade. which of course is exactly why he IS the greatest living British icon.

  • Dear Q, why are only men in the running, what about female artists. Kate Bush et el, I have never liked the Beatles, cant see the point really, give me Dylan anyday, regards Wilmore

  • The songs of Lennon/McCartney changed music *forever*. And Paul's post-Beatles work is full of gems, too. Plus, he's a man of integrity. Of course he is Britain's Greatest Living Icon!

  • David Attenborugh won it, but I personally would have voted for Morrissey. I love David Attenborugh as much as the next man, but Moz's lyrics mean more to me than almost anything else. Its like he's reading my mind. McCartney's incredible and Attenborugh is well, Attenborugh, you cant say much more than that, but Id definitely vote for Morrissey. There is no god, but if there was one, it would be him.

appreciate what Morrisey did musically but

  • Morrissey. NO DOUBT IN MY MIND. He is not depressive, he is not a "misery" as you put it. This man spoke up when nobody else would, and he gave a voice to everyone who dared to oppose the norm. Macca is a beatle, he is NOT the last remaining beatle, and lets face it...he was never the best. Attenborough is a nice old man with a dreamy voice and a well travelled past, but he isnt an Icon. Away with your judgmental, ignorrant views. Morrissey made thousands if not millions of people find a reason to keep faith. This man is not a man, he is a living saint, he is the reason I breathe.
