Garage punk legends The Stooges are to reunite next year for their first album in over 30 years. The band, led by notorious frontman Iggy Pop are to release The Weirdness on the Virgin label on 19 March, featuring original bandmembers Ron Asheton (guitar) and Scott Asheton (drums), plus original Stooges sax player Steve Mackay and ex-Minutemen and fIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt, who performed on their recent reunion tour.
The Weirdness is their first release since 1973’s David Bowie-produced Raw Power and has been produced by the also legendary Steve Albini, who has done the business for the likes of Nirvana and the Pixies. The band split acrimoniously in in 1973 amid some raucous shows (one of which was immortalised on the Metallic K.O. album, in which The Stooges take on the local Hell’s Angels) and some hefty substance abuse, leaving Pop to forge a successful solo career, while classic tracks like 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog gave the nascent punk scene a few ideas.
The band reformed in 2003, when the Ashetons contributed to Iggy’s solo album, Skull Ring. The full blown reunion tour started at that year’s Coachella festival in California. Recent shows have included a performance of the seminal 1970 album Fun House in its entirety in London.
Some of the song titles are Greedy Awful People, Claustrophobia and I'm Fried, which indicates that The Stooges’ surly take on bratty punk rock hasn’t mellowed with age.
