World's oldest record store to close

Comments

The world's oldest record shop looks set to close after months of speculation due to a sharp increase in rent.

Spillers Records in Cardiff has been open since 1894 but rent hikes in its city centre location means it might not be able to stay open.

Manic Street Preachers members Nicky Wire and James Dean Bradfield used to busk outside the shop in the mid-80s and signed a statement with fellow bandmate Sean Moore saying, "Spillers was a lifeline. It gave us our musical education - the only record shop in Wales where we could find the music that made us who we are."

Welsh Assembly minister Owen John Thomas has organised an online petition urging the landowner, Helical Bar, to acknowledge Spillers Records' importance to Cardiff and to charge an affordable rent.

One fan on message board Dragonninja said, "I'd rather see the castle go than Spillers."

Do you go to Spillers? How do you feel about its proposed closure?
