2006 best ever year for British music

Comments

The figures for last year's top-selling albums are out and, despite an excellent year for Arctic Monkeys, they've been beaten not once but three times to take only the number 4 spot in the chart.

Snow Patrol sold the most albums last year, with Eyes Open selling 1.5m. Following them with 1.15m sales of their returning album Beautiful World is Take That while Scissor Sisters sold 1.13m. Arctic Monkeys sold 1.11m.

What the chart shows is a very strong year for British music, with only two acts in the top 10 coming from outside the UK. With new releases from Kaiser Chiefs, Radiohead and James Blunt to come in 2007, this might be the best year yet for UK artists.

1 Snow Patrol - Eyes Open - 1.5m
2 Take That - Beautiful World - 1.15m
3 Scissor Sisters - Ta-Dah 1.13m
4 Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That Is What I'm Not - 1.11m
5 Kooks - Inside In/Inside Out - 1.1m
6 Razorlight - Razorlight - 1m
7 Oasis - Stop The Clock - 910k
8 Westlife - The Love Album - 900k
9 Pink - I'm Not Dead - 855k
10 James Morrison - Undiscovered - 850k

  • Rick's got a bit of bee in his bonnet. 2006 was a vintage year for music...great offerings from The Kooks, Magic Numbers, Razorlight, Muse...actually too many to remember. Thank God for cheap downloads!
