And the winner is...Cat Power?

Comments

Traditionally the preserve of big pop names, it's not often that The Brits lowers their eye below the mainstream radar. But this year's nominations conceal some surprising choices in amidst the usual P!nk and Snow Patrol.

Cat Power (aka singer-songwriter Chan Marshall) has enjoyed a cult following throughout her 11-year career and has been nominated in the best international female solo artist category. While it's initially odd that the famously shy singer is nominated alongside pop heavyweights Beyoncé, P!nk, Nelly Furtado and Christina Aguilera, she's got her fair share of mainstream endorsements. In October 2006, she became the face of Chanel's jewellery range.

A somewhat surprised Marshall released a statement saying, "Happy to see God still has her sense of humour. To be nominated among these incredibly talented, professional, exceptional women, who have touched far more people than I could ever hope to reach. I am speechless. For me to have been accepted on this scale, means more to my family, and their history of struggle than any accomplishment I myself have achieved. Being nominated is just like winning. I am honoured, deeply moved and psyched for the party!! Thank you!! and long live Great Britain!!"

Meanwhile, Fyfe Dangerfield's gang of oddly-named instrumentalists, Guillemots, have been nominated in the best live act category. They may have been nominated for a Mercury prize last year, but alongside the likes of George Michael, Kasabian, Muse and Robbie Williams, they're still the underground choice.

Do they stand a chance in hell or will they be swamped by the popstars? Tell us!
