Babyshambles sign £1m deal

Comments

Parlophone have paid £1 million to sign Babyshambles to their Regal imprint, following the band’s one-off EP The Blinding in December.

Kevin McCabe from Parlophone said, "It's true that Pete and Babyshambles have been given the record deal - I can't confirm the specific details as to whether it's a three album deal, but he has signed."

Babyshambles’ management issued a statement saying, “Both the management and band are thrilled to have signed this deal and look forward to a long, fruitful and creative relationship with Parlophone.”

And Parlophone’s managing director, Miles Leonard, said, “We’re extremely pleased to be welcoming such a vibrant and talented band into the Parlophone label. Babyshambles, justifiably, have a great reputation for crafting some of the most exciting music around today, and in Peter Doherty they have one of the best songwriters of his generation.

“Parlophone have a long history of working with the best British bands, from Radiohead to Blur to Coldplay, and we see Babyshambles very much as continuing this tradition.”

Doherty's notoriously unreliable band played a show at New York's Rhythm Factory last night (18 January) to celebrate the deal.

Are Babyshambles worth the hype, or are Parlophone backing a lost cause? Tell us what you think.

  • Hmmm, is it really wise to cough up such a great sum for a man who became nothing but hype before imploding. I never liked the Libertines but I could see why people did and post break-up it is clear that Carl was the talent.
I also think the desire for jangly indie bands has passed and the only demographic Parlophone can promote the album to is Libertines fans.
Musically I think Pete always was a fish out of water, or to put it bluntly, rubbish. God help us all

    Happy Times.

  • I think probably would be a bit more productive if he didn't have that pointless dead albatross round his neck. So get rid of skanky Moss. He could try giving up crack too.

  • Bit of a joke, really. Doherty and Babyshambles aren't what I would refer to as being 'the greatest of British music' but then it is all down to opinion.I mean, I don't see the likes of Coldplay as being particularly talented either, but their music is cleverly calculated to sell because it is a successful formula all the same. With Parlophone, I imagine the company is attempting to break the market that has made Doherty 'A Celeb'-the likes of the sun and daily mirror readers maybe..not too far removed from big brother really. For me though, the only decent thing to come out of this story-no,not the Libertines,is Carl Barats Dirty Pretty Things, who have a great sound.

  • People saying that Carl was the real talent are a bit ignorant to the fact that The Libertines played mostly Petes songs. He’s a bit of a mess at the moment (remember he is supposed to be a rock star stupid) but when he’s clear headed he makes some good stuff. The blinding e.p was a lot better than stuff like the kooks. I appreciate why people get annoyed by Pete, his face plastered everywhere just for being a crack head. But if you think about it they should probably be annoyed with the media. He just wants to smoke some crack, make a bit of music and bang some supermodels! He may look like an idiot but he is actually more intelligent than most.
