Chart changes favour Snow Patrol

Comments

Snow Patrol are back in the charts after changes allow all download sales to count towards figures in the singles charts.

Previously downloads only counted if you could buy the single on other formats and also if they were purchased within a week of the physical single's release and two weeks of its being deleted. The changes didn't affect the number one single and album (X Factor's Leona and Take That hung on to those) their single Chasing Cars, released last July, made the number nine spot.

The changes to the release constraints mean that several deleted songs have re-entered the charts. 2006's biggest-selling single, Gnarl's Barkley's Crazy, re-entered at number 30, while Nelly Furtado's Maneater came back in at 38. It's expected that the changes to the chart could see a number of old favourites charting, especially as EMI are considering releasing the Beatles' back catalogue in digital form.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said that if that happened a "top 10 made up entirely of their music would be almost guaranteed".

"Under the new rules, anything and everything is eligible," said Castaldo. "The charts will now offer a much broader representation of the nation's music tastes.".
