Is Johnny Depp playing the late Freddie Mercury in a film biopic? Possibly, according to Queen guitarist Brian May.
In a statement on his official website, May wrote, "Discussions are at an early stage. Johnny Depp is fantastic. He would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen."
The project is said to be funded by Tribeca Productions, the company owned by Robert De Niro which also funded the Queen stage musical We Will Rock You.
Depp is no stranger to rock, having based Captain Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards and playing guitar in his own band, but Mercury isn't his first choice of biopic. Being interviewed in 2005, he expressed a wish to play Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett.

I certainly agree that NOBODY could properly play Freddie. But, at the same time, a tribute to him would be nice. And, if I could trust anyone can go close to possibly almost doing a good job, it would be Johnny Depp. However, he does not seem highly interested, which leads me to think he might be an unwise choice.
Conclusion: Freddie stands alone in his greatness.
