Digital music sales may have doubled in the last year but that hasn’t done much to offset the fall in CD sales.
A survey by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) showed that purchases off tracks from digital music providers increased to around £1 billion in 2006 representing 10% of all music sales, but despite this rise sales were down 4% in the first half of the year.
Over 795 million tracks were downloaded legally last year, an increase of 89% from 2005
IFPI chairman John Kennedy said, "The pace of transformation in our industry is breathtaking, but at the moment the holy grail is evading us. I would like to be announcing that a fall in CD sales is being compensated for by an equal or greater increase in online and mobile revenues. But that is not yet happening on a global basis."
Somewhat unsurprisingly, figures for illegal downloads weren’t made available.
