Arctics score Brits double

Comments

Arctic Monkeys bagged two awards at last night's Brit awards - the first to be staged live for 18 years.

For the second year in the row the band stayed away from the ceremony held at Earls Court, saying that they were "busy rehearsing for the year ahead". The band, who won Best British group and British album, sent acceptance videos of them dressed up as characters from the Wizard of Oz, and later as the Village People. If only Joss Stone had taken notes: the newly-Americanised soul hippie looked like she was channelling Cher.

Live acts including Oasis and Best single winners Take That performed on love and hate themed stages, while a giant padlock in the centre of the auditorium was nicknamed "the Robbie Williams medicine cabinet" by host Russell Brand.

Lily Allen, Snow Patrol, Corinne Bailey Rae and Gnarls Barkley all missed out on awards despite multiple nominations. Instead, The Fratellis surprised nearly everyone by beating Allen, Bailey Rae, James Morrison and The Kooks to win Best British newcomer.

Morrison shouldn't be too bothered: he won British Male solo artist, dedicating it to "every singer-songwriter still playing in pubs".

Amy Winehouse, looking disturbingly like a human lemon in a yellow dress, won Best British female solo artist, while Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado scooped the International solo artist prizes.

Unsurprisingly, Liam Gallagher was less cheery than most of the award winners. Collecting Oasis's outstanding achievement award, he said, "I suppose it will have to do."

The winners in full...

British male solo artist - James Morrison
British female solo artist - Amy Winehuose
British album - Arctic Monkeys: Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

  • Did anybody else find Joss Stone the most annoyingly, false, over-confident, name-dropping, english/American oxygen thief this world has ever known?

  • Maybe you should think about that she spent 5 years on America and it's perfectly normal that she adopted the accent a bit.
Then again she was very nervous at the Brits because she was presenting her new self. A new Joss Stone with that crazy curls and legshowing. She's not so confident as you think, she's just changed and is trying not to be the shy girl we got to know 3, 4 years ago.
And.. she was just defending herself. :)
