Over 100 musicians including Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers will perform at eight simultaneous Live 8-style concerts to raise awareness of climate change.
Snow Patrol and Bloc Party are among those who are confirmed to play the Live Earth gigs, which will take place on 7 July at cities including London, Shanghai, Johannesburg and Sydney. The US, Brazil and Japan have yet to decide on which city will host their concert, but Antarctica is also set to host a gig. Line-ups will include regional names as well as national bands to appeal to regional audiences.
Ex-US vice president Al Gore, whose global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth is up for two Oscars, announced the concerts on Thursday with Pharrell Williams, one of the performers. "We have to get the message of urgency and hope out," he said. "The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement."
Other British bands taking part on the UK leg, to be held at Wembley, include Keane, Duran Duran and Paolo Nutini. Muse are hoping to perform if they can move one of their Dublin dates.
Proceeds will go towards the creation of a foundation to combat climate change led by the Alliance for Climate Protection, chaired by Al Gore.

I think it's good that these guys are bothering to do something and get people thinking. It's easy to be cynical but if everybody does something it will make a difference. These guys can get a message across to loads od people who may nto listen otherwise.
I'd also like to see young artists getting a chance to have their voices heard alongside.
e.g. the young singer songwriter Fran O'Hanlon from the N East of England, based in Paris this year - He writes and performs some fantastic songs linked to young peoples' views of the world. People should get a chance to hear them.
How can we get that message across to the organisers of these gigs?
