When Courtney Love sold a quarter of her shares in Nirvana’s back catalogue to a music publisher, she promised to “remain very tasteful” and “take Nirvana places it's never been before.” So we’re very glad to see she’s kept at least half her word, as their song Breed has turned up on the soundtrack to a computer game, Major League Baseball 2K7.
It’s not as ridiculous as it seems though: 2K Sports who made the game have a history of making good soundtracks for their games, and this one sees Nirvana played alongside the Stooges, Pixies, Wolfmother, Tapes 'n Tapes and The Specials.
Well, we sure hope Kurt Cobain was a baseball fan, because Nirvana's "Breed" has turned up on the soundtrack to 2K Sports' Major League Baseball 2K7 video game, due out February 27.
But the Nirvana song isn't the only interesting thing about the MLB 2K7 music. Following in the footsteps of their Sub Pop-sound tracked hockey game, quality hip-hop-based basketball one and the Matador-friendly MLB 2K6, the 2K folks have assembled a stellar collection of tunes for MLB 2K7, including songs by the Stooges, Pixies, the Specials, Les Savy Fav, the Thermals, Death From Above 1979, the Walkmen, Tapes 'n Tapes, Bishop Allen, and Wolfmother.

Is it taking advantage to have Nirvana in a game, regardless of who's also in it, or are people just too precious about the whole thing?

I think one of the reasons that article reads so badly is because it's just not very interesting.

This is a big deal to all of the big Nirvana fans. I understand that they really don't want the band's music used because Nirvana was the biggest anti-commercial band in history. I love the song, don't think it fits in a baseball game anyway.

I hardly call Nirvana signing a record deal, appearing on countless magazine covers & chat shows & making music videos for MTV “The biggest anti-commercial band in history” & in the same breath I certainly don’t believe that “all” Nirvana fans will give a monkeys whether a Nirvana song has appeared in a video game or not.
What’s the alternative to this? Stop Nirvana music from being featured anywhere so future generations never get to hear it & the music fades away for ever... Do me a favour.

nirvana was a major label band that was involved in selling music on a large scale. but I'm pretty shocked to hear it in video game commercials and I think it's crap, Cobain did fight hard to get a lot of artistic freedom on there records and videos, compromise was a part of it, but music videos, and records were a part of trying to be a successful musician chopping up singles to artfully avoid the unappealing not kid tv friendly lyrics, to help sell your sorts games doesn't have anything to do with it, and I don't there is any reason this is happening other than that those roalty checks and catolog sells are probably just about gone with radio going spanish/hip hop and no one buying records anymore
