Acts including Arctic Monkeys and Jarvis helped indie labels to have one of their most successful years ever, according to a survey.
Indie record label earned an all-time high of two-thirds of the silver discs awarded to British acts in 2006, the Association of Independent Music (AIM) said.
The survey showed that eight out of twelve albums to sell more than 60,000 copies and get silver status were from indie labels. Jarvis Cocker, Elbow and two early Snow Patrol releases were among those earning silver discs, with the top-selling album belonging to Arctic Monkeys' debut.
Another eight acts - including Paul Weller, Morrissey, Babyshambles and Embrace - sold over 100,00 copies each to gain gold status.
AIM went on to say that the tendency of supermarkets to concentrate on established names had resulted in independent music "being largely excluded from platinum and multi-platinum sales awards" but that 2007 looked bright with hotly-tipped new releases from Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party and Enter Shikari on the way.
