The Police open Grammys Ceremony

Comments

The Police kicked off last night’s Grammy Awards at Los Angeles Staples Centre, in the ceremony’s 49th year. Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers haven’t played together since 2003, at their induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, but Sting fuelled rumours of an upcoming tour – which has now been officially announced, and will encompass fourteen dates across North America, starting in Vancouver on 28 May - by proclaiming "Ladies and gentlemen, we are the Police and we're back!" before kicking into Roxanne.

No-longer-popular-in-The-South country band Dixie Chicks, were big winners on the night, picking up five gongs including Song of the Year, Country Album, and the fantastically-titled Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Natalie Maines, the member responsible for the anti-Bush comments in 2003 which made the band a hate-target, couldn’t resist the opportunity to gloat, doing her best impression of Nelson from The Simpsons, pronouncing "Hah-hah'', to her detractors.

Beyonce picked up best contemporary R&B album, her only win from four nominations, and Gnarls Barkley continued their run of awards success winning Alternative Music Album and Urban/Alternative Performance.

Other winners on the night included Justin Timberlake, Mary J Blige, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Wolfmother, Ludacris and Tony Bennett.
