What with the drugs, the blood and the tabloid coverage, it's easy to forget that Pete Doherty actually did something once before he became the paparazzi's meal ticket, but he's set to remind us with two dates at the Hackney Empire.
The Babyshambles frontman will curate evenings on 11 and 12 April with poetry readings, acoustic sets and special guests to be announced.
Tickets cost £17.50 and go on sale at 9am on Wednesday 7 March. It's probably a bit mean to hope they've got refund cash at the ready, but then we've been to Pete's gigs before...
Does Doherty have enough talent to warrant our continued attention, or is he just a tabloid doormat? Tell us what you think.

Why don't you go to the show and find out? Instead of trying to create controversy.

WEll, he is talented but poetry readings? I live in Glastonbury and believe me they're all shite. And if Kate Moss is there, there would be no chance I'd be paying to see that skanky washout.

Listen up those who doubt him: he used to hold weekly poetry readings before he got famous; he's an exceptional talent and a poetry expert was reported as saying Peter could have changed the face of music forever had he been a poet instead of being in a band. I'm rather looking forward to the event.

Correction sorry: I meant changed the face of poetry, not music. Although he's done that aswell.

One thing that really makes me sick is the brithish press!
My real problem is that of Pete Doherty's portrayal within said media. It is hard to find someone who doesn't have an oppinion on Pete and sadly it seems that much more often than not those opinions seem to be quite strongly against him. I think it is a sad indictment of british popular culture that the former Libertine frontman and saviour of british rock has been so vilified and that as your above article suggests, has been completely forgotten for what he (initially and rightfully) is famous for. Not heroin, not Kate Moss, but music.
Pete Doherty is a creative and talented person who, like all great artists, may have his troubles, but has distinguised himself from the lazy, talentless, slobish and above all envious masses that read the magazines in which Pete has been made infamous.
I would also like to suggest that those individuals who, like me, appreciate what Pete Doherty has and is doing to popular culture, good and bad, is a wonderful thing to be a pert of. Those who don't like or understand it are missing out on being part of one of the greatest things to happen in British Rock history.

If I show up with a bag of crack and a bottle of gin, d'yer think that'll get me in?

What a bunch of sad groupees - waste your money if you will, at least you'll help Pete along with his addictions and hopefully into a closed psychiatric unit so we can free up the local police cells.

As I look at and speak to fans of the libs, bsham and dpt, one thing stands out. These people are usually highly intelligent , more so than the people who vilify Pete, and many are English Lit students, like me.
I think only truly intelligent people can understand the depth of Pete's lyrics and his pure talent. Those who don't like him are usually uneducated, the types who read trashy celeb mags and tabloids.
I for one can't wait to see him on the 12th. He's beautiful and so inspiring. He's repsected and adored by his many fans, and will continue to be for many years to come.

Pete Doherty is a complete and utter pecker. He is not a poetic genius - he is just a rather sad skag head. I think some people really need to get their heads out of their backsides. I hope he goes to jail very soon. To say that people who like Pete Doherty are more intelligent than everyone else is hilarious. You'll be telling me that his artwork on his albums is also worthy of an exhibition at the Tate next. A five year old could do better, which is ironic really, because anyone who has seen Doherty interviewed will realise that he has a personality of a five year old. Also, what's with those stupid hats he always wears? The lad needs a bath, a square meal,a tube of clearasil, followed by a swift kick in the balls.

Being an English Literature student, I believe that my ability to read books makes me intelligent, thus giving me an intense appreciation of true talent. Pete is such a man (of talent). Like. I've created a poem that I hope Pete will read out at his gig.
There was a man called Pete Doherty,
Who's girlfriend could do with publicity,
He sold coke stories to a rag,
So he could buy skag,
But it won't stop QPR from being relegated.
Kiss kiss.

The man is Hadaway in disguise. What a talent less waste of skin, he sucks balls whether you have a degree or not .

I don't have a degree in English Lit, but I am the world's greatest living scientist, and am big mates with Alan Yentob and Melvyn Bragg. We all think that Doherty's work is rather mundane and a bit pedestrian if the truth be told. I much prefer more meaningful music, where the lyrics really give you an insight into what it means to grow up in Blairite Britain while the country is at war - of course I am talking about Scooch, the Fast Food Rockers, Chico, and Kasabian.

Peter is a very creative being. A musician, Poet and an artist, like many people.
Without doubt, one of the best artists this country has produced.
The patriotism, the lyrics, the poetry. Very modest and wonderful to be around.
The drug-taking is his personal freedom.
Alot of creative people in the past took drugs as inspiration. Keats, conan doyle, blake,Jim morrison, hendrix the list goes on.
let him be.
Good luck to him in proving tabloid-reading ignorance wrong.

I think it's harsh to say that all intellctuals understand Pete and only cretins abuse him, everyone is entitled to thier opinion whether they have an Englsih Lit degree or not! I am a huge fan of all his work although there's no doubt that The Libertines were the pinnacle, I'd give anything for him & Carl to reconcile and reform but I guess they've both moved on.
Am off to the wednesday night show and really looking forward to it, Pete's a great lyricist & songwriter and it should be a good night. Anyone any idea who these special guests are?

Whoever went to the Wednesday night show instead of the Thursday one must now be absoloubtly gutted!!! The special guest last night was none other than the amzing Mr Carlos Barat!!!!! They've paired up to sing for the first time since the Libs, and I can honestly say it was the best night ever, the atmosphere was electric! I'll never forget that night for as long as I live
