Classic clip - The Smiths

Comments

Inspired by the news that The Smiths are to be inducted into the US Music Hall Of Fame in 2008 (though Morrissey, sadly, won't be attending), we thought we'd dig out this bizarre clip from 1985, in which a non-plussed Morrissey and Marr field questions from schoolkids on long-forgotten children's show Charlie's Bus.

Amateurish and low-rent, it's a touching evocation of mid-'80s England. Meanwhile, the following weary exchange is a moment of Northern bathos worthy of Alan Bennett:

Child: "Where are we going?"

Morrissey: "We're all going mad."

Child (disconsolately): "I thought we were going to Kew Gardens."

  • Ha ha, i love this clip. rock stars on kids' TV always good for a laugh - also see REM on the muppet show, singing 'furry happy monsters'.

  • Remember seeing this in the Youtube list in the mag - also good to discover Morrissey's cameo in South. Never knew he fancied himself as a Coronation St script writer..
