Q's recent special issue on the 500 Greatest Lost Tracks threw up many overlooked gems, but few more spectacular than Radiohead's Lift, a song the band originally penned for 1997's OK Computer but then mysteriously ditched. To this day, it has never had an official release.
Epic and anthemic, the song was a mainstay of Radiohead's live set in 1996. This particular performance, in which singer Thom Yorke alters the lyrics self-referentially ("We've been trying to reach you, Thom"), is from the Pinkpop Festival, The Netherlands, in May of that year.
With its spinetingling chorus, Lift would surely have been a fine addition to OK Computer. Here's hoping the band dust it off and give it a proper studio treatment some day..
