Strange that everyone should react with such shock to the news that Pete Doherty is reportedly down to his last crack pipe. Aside from having a fabulously wealthy girlfriend - which can't hurt, admittedly - why would anyone assume him to be rich?
The Libertines were a legendary band, but they never sold millions of albums. In fact, when you factor in all the legal expenses, they probably never even recouped their advance from Rough Trade. Plus everyone knows the last Babyshambles album bombed catastrophically. And besides, junkies don't exactly make great businessmen. Can you imagine Pete and Kate diligently going through their tax returns after a heavy night?
Anyway, Doherty's accounts for the financial year up to April 2006 have somehow come to light (which begs the question, which desperate tabloid hacks are looking for this stuff?), and they reveal that one Babyshambles tour alone made a loss of £21,737. A poor show, admittedly - but Doherty long ago ceased to be a jobbing musician. He's now a brand, a cypher, a soap opera... playing gigs these days is somewhat incidental to what he does, or stands for.
Which makes it all the more intriguing that Babyshambles have been booked for a string of arena dates this November and December. Can anyone really imagine their ramshackle racket filling Wembley? Ticket sales, we hear, have been sluggish so far. But who knows? The band have just signed a lucrative new record deal with Parlophone (rumoured to be worth £1 million). Evidently, people are still willing to give Doherty a second chance.
But if this next album stiffs, he may find he's exhausted everyone's patience.
