In a surprise move, punk trio Green Day have announced details of a new single - which is available to download from today (May 1).
Their shock comeback single is a cover of John Lennon's Working Class Hero. It will be available through iTunes, with profits going to help those affected by the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan.
The song will also feature on a John Lennon tribute album, Instant Karma: The Campaign To Save Darfur, which is released May 25 and features Lennon covers from REM, Black Eyed Peas, U2, Jack Johnson, Christina Aguilera, Snow Patrol and Aerosmith.
Green Day are not the first act to cover Working Class Hero. It's previously been tackled by Marianne Faithfull, Marilyn Manson, Ozzy Osbourne, Elbow, Mark Lanegan - and, most recently, Manic Street Preachers, who have covered the song as a bonus track on new album Send Away The Tigers.

I think this is a really great cover, regardless if you're a fan of Green Day or not. Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre really put a lot of effort into this song that's clearly heard in the music. The song is great, and it was done for a wonderful cause.

Better than Lennon? You are an insane girl. Green Day are an absolutely incredible band, yes, but to say they did better than the original is a disgrace to the music world. Don't get me wrong, Green Day is my favorite band, but saying that they did Lennon's own song better than Lennon is practically blasphemous. They did an absolutely superb job though, as usual. Nice going guys.

I luuuuuv dis cover. billies voice is amahzing. Billie mike and tre all did amahzing. I luv greenday to bits n i cant wait 4 their new album 2 cum out! if its beta than american idiot well it shud be a masterpiece. Im obsessed. good job though guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
