Portland, Oregon indie rockers The Shins received a massive boost in 2004 when they were featured on the soundtrack to Garden State, the bittersweet sleeper hit written and directed by Scrubs star Zach Braff. There's a key scene in which Natalie Portman's character plays Shins track New Slang to Braff's character, promising that it will "change [his] life."
The subsequent word-of-mouth buzz ensured The Shins' third album Wincing The Night Away, released earlier this year, debuted at Number 2 in America. Turn On Me is the next single to be taken from the album, and will coincide with the band's appearance at the Reading and Leeds festivals in August. The track finds singer James Mercer in cryptic mood, conjuring abstract imagery ("The stars are leaking out/Like spittle from a cloud") over a backdrop of chiming guitars and ethereal keyboards. Majestic stuff.
