Arctic Monkeys' album title nightmare

Comments

Arctic Monkeys release their somewhat eagerly anticipated Favourite Worst Nightmare album this coming Monday, 23 April. Expectations are that the album will sell up to 250,000 copies in its first week, and thus help revive moribund sales figures for the first quarter of the year. It has already, of course, been bestowed with a five-star review in Q.

All well and good, but Favourite Worst Nightmare? It sounds like the title of an ’80s thrash metal album. It follows, of course, a long tradition of major bands saddling themselves with rubbish album titles (the grammatically horrendous Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, anyone?) and prompts Q to ask, what is the worst
record title of all time?

Over to you...

  • Anything with a pun is always embarrassing...

Smashing Pumpkins' Melon Collie And The Infinite Sadness? Oof.

  • What's so bad about Favourite Worst Nightmare?

New White Stripes is called 'Icky Thump' - surely that's far worse? And what's with the pearly king and queen outfits?

  • Any overblown prog rock odyssey. Coheed And Cambria called their last album 'Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness'.

  • Sparklehorse, 'Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot'. Try asking for that in a record shop.

  • Oh god where to start...

Aha Shake Heartbreak- Kings of Leon
Safe as Fuck- Goldie Lookin Chain
The Uplift Mofo Party Plan- RHCP
(What's the Story) Morning Glory?- Oasis

And finally, the worst of all album titles, certainly of the last year...

    B'day- Beyonce

Surely someone could have just typed that into google just to check...

  • give the monkeys a break, at least they are trying to portray something with their title and are branching out a little bit. Most other bands are so conservative these days, snow patrol: eyes wide open! come on.

  • I forget the whole title and the artist but the title was like 40 words long and took up the entire cover of the album. That's just stupid

  • ever heard of Irony? it's a pretty close thing to Favourite Mistake thing, you know? something you hate that becomes the part of you which you can't ignore. really, i do have a real favourite nightmare, but i'm sure Monkeys didn't mean the actual dreaming process.. anyway, it's taken from their new track 'D Is for Dangerous'. check it out, and oh yeah, - what about the worst music mag title, Q?! p.s. i think the Arctics' first one was a bit pretentiouslly daft. but who cares, lads rock.

  • 'My people were fair and had sky in their hair, but now they're content to wear stars on their brows'

Tyrannosaurus Rex's seminal late sixties title manages to be both one of the best and the worst of all album titles. They just don't have the imagination these days....

  • Fiona Apple's 1999 album title must be unique in being longer than the album it was attached to. "When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and if You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and if You Fall It Won't Matter, 'Cuz You'll Know That You're Right". Good effort that woman...

  • I think as shit album titles go, Arctic Monkeys had alot to live up to after the name of their first album, easily the worst album title of all time. EASILY. They may have nearly exceeded it with this? Next Oasis -- haha -- not even the next Strokes.

  • "Hooray For Boobies" by The Bloodhound Gang. Not the worst album title ever, you might think, until it flashes up on the cash register at Virgin Megastore for everyone to see.
