Classic clip - Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft

It's almost 10 years since the release of Urban Hymns, The Verve's gargantuan, 7 million-selling masterpiece. It's an album whose key songs still attract superlatives. Introducing Richard Ashcroft onstage at Live 8 in July 2005, Coldplay's Chris Martin desribed Bittersweet Symphony as "probably the best song ever written."

Coldplay's performance of the track - with Ashcroft on vocals - was a high point of the London Live 8 show, and marked Ashcroft's return to action after two years of silence. You can tell from his impassioned delivery here just how excited he is to be back on stage.

A year later the singer seemed to go off the rails - in June 2006 he was fined for disorderly conduct after gatecrashing a youth centre in Wiltshire. At Live 8, though, he was on fire...
