Of course this was never a hit: it was created by someone whose entire career is based on cult appeal. Whether helping to invent literate indie rock with the superb Felt during the ‘80s or, latterly, mucking about with the gimmicky Go Kart Mozart, Lawrence Hayward’s never happier than standing on the fringes, thumbing his nose at the mainstream.
He can write a tune though. Denim’s Middle Of The Road is from his glam years, 1992 – 1997, which yielded one utterly brilliant album, 92’s Back In Denim. This is its best track.
