This summer sees the return of grunge kingpins The Smashing Pumpkins – or at least frontman Billy Corgan, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and a couple of hired hands. It’s unlikely their new album, Zeitgeist will recapture the alt-rock magic of old. However, this certainly will. LA’s Silversun Pickups peddle exactly the kind of dreamy, meandering rock that was all the rage last decade, right down to the obligatory shouty chorus. The band, who are named after their own trips to the local off-licence , release their excellent debut album, Carnavas, next month.
