Track of the Day: Newton Faulkner

Comments

Singer-songwriter takes on Massive Attack’s Teardrop and wins.

How do we know that Teardrop, the Liz Fraser-fronted ballad from Massive Attack’s 1998 album Mezzanine, has reached classic status? Because cover versions are beginning to creep out of the woodwork. First there was Northern gloom merchants Elbow, who substituted Fraser’s angelic warble with front man Guy Garvey’s mournful tones for a 2003 b-side. Now comes Surrey singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner, a dreadlocked, Jack Johnson-type who turns it into a slow acoustic blues. Taken from Faulkner’s debut album, Hand Built By Robots, which is released on 23 July.

  • Love this! A brilliant take. Would have thought this was an uncoverable classic but its good to see people like Faulkner and Mark Ronson approaching covers in a fresh way. Not sure about the dreads but hey, you can't have everything eh?

  • This guy is unbelievable! Seen him live a couple of times now - awesome. Never thought I'd hear a decent cover of this classic, but, if anything, his version is even better!!!

  • Link still not working, but hey ho I've got it on his UFO EP and it's on his myspace too. Utterly brilliant cover - how many covers are better than the original? Well this one is! Can't say more, except see him live, while you can still get tickets.
