Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hutz
They threw away the mold when then made Eugene Hütz. Wild of eye and voluminous of moustache, the larger-than-life Gogol Bordello frontman and self-professed “gypsy punk” could start a party in an empty broom cupboard.
But his superhuman charisma and extravagant facial topiary are just two of the many reasons why the Ukraine-born Hütz is his country’s greatest export since the painted Easter Egg. There’s his triumph in the face of adversity – he spent his youth in refugee camps after his family was evacuated from their home in the wake of the Chernobyl disaster. There’s his memorable appearance as a shell-suited interperter in 2005’s Everything Is Illuminated, in which he steals the entire film from under Elijah Wood’s nose. And there’s his willingness to risk life, limb and ’tache by dancing on a bass drum that’s passed over the heads of the crowd at the climax of Gogol Bordello shows.
Oh, and next month' s new album, Super Taranta!, is fantastic, especially the self-explanatory American Wedding.
Eugene Hütz, we salute you!
