New Hard Fi album

Comments

The other Staines massive, Hard Fi, will release their second album in
September, and Q was treated to exclusive, if unusual, preview of it today.
Where such things usually take place in the executive boardrooms of record
labels or the bowels of a recording studio, Hard Fi's eagerly anticipated
follow up to Stars Of CCTV received its premier in a Volkswagen Beetle,
parked up in North London.

Said car belonged to the band's larger-than-life publicist Barbara Charone,
who played Q a handful of tracks at a volume designed to dislodge the
fillings from teeth. Like Stars Of CCTV, the album has been recorded at the
band's own studio in Staines, but the indications are it marks a substantial
step on from the acclaimed debut, both in terms of production (big,
polished, filled with diverting details – such as the cheeky Justin
Timberlake sample that introduces I Shall Overcome) and the quality and
craft of frontman Richard Archer's songwriting.

Initial highlights are lead-off single Suburban Knights (due in August),
wherein The Clash meet heaving r'n'b head on to stir up the perfect late
summer soundtrack. Similarly impressive is the aforementioned I Shall
Overcome, a stately epic blessed with a sweeping, insistent chorus. Best of
all, though, is Tonight, another Clash-gone-hi-tech anthem which already
sounds like the pivotal track on the album.
