Much has been made of the fact that Lily Allen turned up to the Glastonbury VIP bar last Friday (22 June) dressed as a giant mushroom. It’s not the first time she’s donned a ludicrous costume, either.

What’s less known is that Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner was also backstage at Glastonbury, minutes after coming offstage, dressed as a dinosaur.

Perhaps it was a ploy to fend off unwanted attention. If so, it worked: hardly anyone recognized him, and he was able to queue for the bar in peace.

All of which begs the question, what is it with pop stars and daft costumes?

Mika
As if the song Lollipop wasn’t over-the-top enough as it is, Mika likes to perform it live while dressed as a giant fluffy chicken. You don’t get that with Athlete.

The Flaming Lips
The original and best. Wayne Coyne’s fondness for animal costumes has been responsible for a thousand, “Woah, if I was on drugs this would be really weird” festival moments.

Panic! At The Disco
The video for Gym Class Heroes’ slightly naff Clothes Off single features a room full of giant furry animals playing cards and smoking cigars. Only the most clued-up emo scenesters knew that this was actually Panic! At The Disco in disguise. Also look out for Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz dressed as Elvis for some reason.

The Bronx
Three minutes in, the obligatory giant rabbit – played with stern-faced seriousness by frontman Matt Caughthran – smacks Santa Claus square in the face, sparking a mass street brawl. What does this have to do with the song’s anti-cocaine message? Not sure, really.
