The greatest festival moments ever

Comments

The festival season begins in earnest today, with Isle Of Wight and Download both kicking off what promises to be a glorious summer of rock. To celebrate, here’s our pick of the greatest festival moments ever.

Franz Ferdinand, T In The Park 2006
Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs – and ten other drummers – joined Alex Kapranos for the song Outsiders. Good-natured chaos ensued.

Queens Of The Stone Age and Dave Grohl, Glastonbury 2002
What rocks harder than QOTSA playing their piledriving anthem Avon at Glastonbury? QOTSA backed by the ex-drummer of Nirvana, that’s what.

Oasis and Robbie, Glastonbury 1995
This brief, shakey-cam clip of Robbie twatting about while Liam sings Shakermaker is the only footage that currently exists of this legendary festival moment.

The Strokes and Slash, Irvine Meadows, 2004
Halfway through New York City Cops, Julian Casablancas declares, “The fucking king – give it up for Slash!” Cue a half-arsed solo played a man who looks like the undead. Still, that’s rock n’roll for you.

REM and Thom Yorke, Tibetan Freedom Concert, 1998
One of REM’s least memorable songs, E-Bow The Letter, performed by a berk in a sarong. Then Thom Yorke turns up and all is forgiven.

Flaming Lips, Glastonbury, 2003
A vast crowd stretching to the horizon. A stage full of nutters in animal costumes. Moments like this are what make Glasto great.

Primal Scream with Dave Gahan and Mick Jones, Reading 1994
“We wanna get loaded,” went the intro. Dave Gahan, then at the height of his heroin addiction, no doubt agreed.

New Order and Keith Allen, Reading 1998.
A triumphant performance of New Order’s classic footie anthem World In Motion. Shame England’s World Cup had fizzled out at the hands of Argentina months two months before.
