New to Q: Beirut

All hail the one man Balkan folk orchestra!

Beirut’s debt album Gulag Orkestar was one of last year’s most pleasant surprises. Although it sounded half way between Arcade Fire and an Eastern European wedding, it was the work of just one man, the precociously talent 21-year-old Zach Condon. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Condon was inspired by Balkan folk music after dropping out of school to bum round Europe. New single Elephant Gun sums up his idiosyncratic blend of old and new worlds perfectly. Condon and his brass-filled backing band play the UK next month, pitching up at Glastonbury before headlining London’s Koko on 26 June.
