Like Antony Hegarty, Montreal-based singer-songwriter Patrick Watson has one of those stunning, androgynous voices that stops you in its tracks on first listen. His new single The Great Escape - taken from last year’s debut album Close To Paradise – is a fragile, emotive ballad whose sophisticated arrangement betrays Watson’s background as a classical pianist (he counts Debussy and Satie among his key influences).
We think the track has all the makings of an underground, word-of-mouth hit. Buy it on iTunes. Meanwhile, Watson is playing a couple of London dates on 11 and 12 June. [Myspace]
