Drastic Fantastic, the follow-up to KT Tunstall’s 3.5 million-selling debut Eye To The Telescope, is released 18 September. It’s preceded by stomping single Hold On which you can listen to exclusively right here.
It’s a close cousin of Black Horse And The Cherry Tree, the propulsive, blues-influenced track (winner of Best Track at the 2005 Q Awards) that made Tunstall’s name - especially in America where the song was such a big hit it was even covered on American Idol, the most watched TV show on earth.
Last weekend the Fife-born singer-songwriter cemented her US fame by appearing at the New York leg of Live Earth.
The strident rhythms of Hold On were apparently inspired by Tunstall’s newfound love of dancehall (“It’s got a little bit of booty grind in it,” she says). It’s a brash and confident opening salvo from an album that had an often-turbulent gestation. Two years of touring had caused Tunstall’s childhood kidney defect to flare up.
“I was pretty broken, health-wise,” she explains. “Antibiotics sap your energy and I was finding it hard to concentrate.”
Happily, after taking time off in late 2006, Tunstall’s mojo returned and she was able to complete work on Drastic Fantastic at Eden Studios in Chiswick, West London. The results, she hopes, will see her filling arenas: “That will be the next logical step. And the prospect doesn’t scare me at all.”

Unfortunately, this audio stream gives me an error in Windows Media Player 11 saying "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file" right at 2:40 on both computers where I've tried it.
Otherwise, sounds terrific! A great song that really should do well as a single. Gwan the Tunstall!
