Radiohead 'do' Rhinestone Cowboy

Comments

Last week we were so floored by Antony And The Johnsons’ wobble-voiced version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love, it inspired us to compile this list of similarly barmy-yet-brilliant covers…

Radiohead – Rhinestone Cowboy
Performed pre-Pablo Honey and never released, Radiohead’s deadpan take on the cheeseball Glen Campbell classic is even better than their version of Carly Simon’s Nobody Does It Better. While we’re on he subject, check out Thom Yorke’s stunning rendition of Neil Young’s After The Gold Rush .

Muse – Can’t Take My Eyes Off You
Watch Matt Bellamy spit out the “ba-ba ba-ba” bits with full-on rawk aggression. Genius.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – I Feel Love
John Frusciante brings his freakish falsetto to bear on Donna Summer’s thrumming electro anthem.

We Are Scientists – End Of The Road
Yes, the Boyz II Men song. The indie geeks’ cover of Phil Collins’ Against All Odds is another live favourite.

My Morning Jacket, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
Fantastically doleful reworking of one of Prince’s most upbeat songs. It’s hosted here.

Arctic Monkeys – Rockafella Skank
Curtains Close is an unreleased Monkeys track that occasionally features in their live set. Here they segue it seamlessly into Fatboy Slim’s surf-guitar floor-filler Rockafella Skank. Also hosted here.

Flaming Lips – Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
Wayne Coyne twists Kylie’s signature tune into a desolate, psychedelic dirge – but in a good way. Watch it on Youtube.

Editors – Road To Nowhere
If Talking Heads’ David Byrne had sung in the manner of a haunted tree…

Travis – Baby One More Time
Another example of the trusty ‘make an upbeat pop song sound melancholy, thereby adding a new layer of meaning to the lyrics’ approach.

Tori Amos – Raining Blood
Not the best cover you’ll hear, but certainly the most disturbing (unless you count Alanis Morrisette booty-grinding her way through My Humps). Shudder.

  • Thom Yorke’s rendition of after The Gold Rush makes me appreciate Neil Young's version that much more. I enjoyed the tribute though.
