King Creosote, aka alt-folk troubadour Kenny Anderson, ticks all the “cult” boxes. Having self-released almost thirty albums - with cavalier disdain for commercial recognition - his name has become a byword for indier-than-thou quirkiness.
Which makes it all the more remarkable that King Creosote has been signed by Warners. It’s a brave move on their part, since Anderson’s music, while always intriguing, is almost impossible to pigeon-hole.
New single You’ve No Clue Do You is typical of his genre-straddling, grab-bag approach. The airy harmonies suggest Eagles-style country rock, yet the strings and galloping bass recall classic disco… while Anderson’s Fife accent (not to mention lyrical references to Cluedo’s Professor Plum) place the song in a surrealist dimension all of its own.
Strange, beguiling stuff. Have a listen.
You’ve No Clue Do You is out as a single 3 September, followed by album Bombshell the following week. File alongside Beirut in your wonky-yet-strangely-moving folk collection.
