Paris-born, Barcelona-based Manu Chao tends to be filed in the ‘Latin music’ section of record shops, but his wildly celebratory music actually steers a manic course through punk, reggae and mosh pit-friendly rock. His live show is so adaptable, in fact, he recently co-headlined Coachella, normally the preserve of chin-stroking indie acts.
His 1998 album Clandestino is among the biggest-selling in French music history, with more than 2.5 million copies sold. He’s surprisingly huge in America, too, even appearing on the front page of The Wall Street Journal.
Manu Chao fans are currently toasting the imminent release (4 September) of La Radiolina, his first new studio album in six years. It’s preceded by the digital only single Rainin In Paradize, a typically impossible-to-categorize mash-up of skanking beats, gonzo punk riffs and righteous polemical fury.
