This year’s Carling Weekend Reading and Leeds, headlined by Razorlight, Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers is but a couple of weeks away. To celebrate here’s a quick trip through some highlights of what old folk still think of as the plain old Reading Festival.
Nirvana
Drain You/Smells Like Teen Spirit ,1991
Everyone recalls Kurt Cobain being pushed onstage in a wheelchair in 1992. Most people forget they played the year before. They were great, obviously.
Radiohead
Creep, 1994
At this point they were no one’s favourite band and still best known for this one song. How little we all knew.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Under The Bridge, 1994
Back before the second wind of Californication. That's Jane’s Addiction’ sDave Navarro filling in on guitar.
Stones Roses
Ten Storey Love Song, 1996
People who saw this still bear the scars. Only Ian Brown and Mani were left from the original line up, which had been augmented by a dancing raver. They never performed again.
Green Day
Basket Case 2004
Muse
Invincible, 2006
Cue Matt Bellamy making wobbly noises with his guitar mounted Theremin thingy.
