Random list: foul-mouthed songs

Comments

This week the Q office has been bitterly divided by Kate Nash’s Made Of Bricks album. The debate has so far hinged on the track Dickhead, which consists of Nash slurring the words, “Why you being a dickhead for?” over a sleepy, faux-R&B beat. To some, the track is winningly direct. To others it’s a work of hackle-raising, sub-Vicky Pollard vacuity.

Anyway, it got us thinking about a few other memorably foul-mouthed songs…

Amy Winehouse – Me And Mr Jones (Fuckery)
Rarely has the F-word been delivered with such sultry, feline froideur.

Rage Against the Machine – Killing In The Name
Pity poor Bruno Brookes, the hapless DJ who mistakenly played the uncensored version on Radio 1 in 1992 - complete with 16 repetitions of the refrain, “Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me”, followed by a blood-curdling, “Motherfuckaaah!”

Babyshambles – Fuck Forever
It used to be said this was Doherty’s only decent post-Libertines song. Next month’s unexpectedly ace French Dog Blues album should correct that.

Peaches – Fuck The Pain Away
Actually one of the less shocking moments in the career of a woman who called her second album Fatherfucker.

Terence & Philp – Uncle Fucka
Sorry, we just couldn’t resist…

  • Was it Scott Mills a few years ago who managed to play the album version of Creep by Radiohead on radio 1. Was woken up by my radio alarm to the refrain of "You're so Fucking special", cue lots of apologising, although he didn't seem to notice until he'd played the song all the way through. Seemed far ruder to stop the song halfway through.

  • Surely Oasis' best moment on their otherwise disappointing Standing on the Shoulders... album Fuckin' in the Bushes has got to be in there, but also the Super Furries' The Man Don't Give a Fuck. The single sleeve was great too, featuring Cardiff City legend Robin Friday giving a Liam-esque two fingers to the crowd.

  • You're a fuckin Idiot... SotSoG is possibly their best album. Every track (minus Little James, sorry Liam...) is bitchin... The tracks on that are so much better than anything on Be Here Now its sick... You should listen to that album again closer (key track: Roll It Over. The best song the band had done since Whats the Story and until The Importance of Being Idle...

  • It's an oldie, but what about marianne faithfull's 'why'd ya do it?' It's not full of 'fucks', but her delivery makes every foul word cut.

  • The pogue's The Boys from County Hell has a few choice sweary moments with added venom that only Shane mcGowan can carry off..

  • Kyle, you're a fuckin idiot if you think Standing on the Shoulders... is Oasis' best album. And read my post again knobhead. I didn't say it was their worst...I said it was "otherwise disappointing" which compared to Definitely Maybe, What's the Story... and the Masterplan it most certainly is.

Back on topic...how about John Lennon's "Working Class Hero"? Not as sweary as a lot of the other tracks here, but about as far away from Wings/Macca's "Band on the Run" as you could get...

  • Yup, The Man Don't Give a F*ck by the Super Furry Animals is sheer class...and
when they played at a very wet Reading Festival, the sun came out. Damned right!

  • How about virtually anything by underrated genius Malcolm Middleton. 'Autumn' from 'Into the Woods' surely features the best use of scotts brogue & shocking profanity in a rhyming couplet: 'Oh Autumn, you f*cking c*ny, keep giving me memories I dinnae want'.

  • also the manic street preachers song: yes, which the forth word in is CUNT

  • Can't believe no one has mentioned Tenacious D. "Fuck Her Gently" is ultra-conspicuous by its absence, but the harmonising of the line "You motherfucker" on Karate is about as good as singing swear words gets.
However, SFA's 'The Man Don't Give A Fuck', as other people have commented, should really have topped this list. And what about Jarvis Cocker's 'Running the World'? Classic swearing in song.
