New to Q: Robyn

Comments

Robyn has been hovering on pop’s fringes for well over a decade, but it’s only now, with melancholic trance masterpiece With Every Heartbeat tipped to hit Number 1 this Sunday, that she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves.

Already a music industry veteran at 28, Robyn’s career is a fascinating one. She had a UK Top 10 hit with Show Me Love as far back as 1993, and collaborated with fellow Swede Max Martin - before he went on to massive success as blockbuster hitmaker for Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys.

She disappeared off the radar for many years (at least in this country – she’s always been huge in Sweden), before reappearing last year on Basement Jaxx’s Crazy Itch Radio album, guesting on the track Hey U.

Along the way she’s also found work as a UNICEF ambassador, visiting countries such as Kenya and Tanzania. Clearly, this is no vacuous, airhead starlet.

What’s intriguing about Robyn, though, is that beneath the gleaming synths and electro beats there’s evidently a fragile, Tori Amos-style singer-songwriter trying to get out. That side of her is exposed in this (rather cheesily presented) footage of her singing an acoustic version of 2005 single Be Mine, accompanied only by piano.

A guilty pleasure, for sure, but evidence of a complex and weirdly compelling talent. If only all pop stars were this interesting.
